A House of Prayer

Above the entrance to the Delft synagogue, visitors will notice the Hebrew inscription: כִּי בֵיתִי בֵּית-תְּפִלָּה יִקָּרֵא לְכָל-הָעַמִּים. This quote, from the Israelite prophet Yeshayahu (Isaiah 56:7), translates to: “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Prayer is central in this ‘House of G-d’. In the Shema prayer, we recite Sh’ma Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Eḥad: Hear, O Israel, Adonai our G-d, Adonai is One.

Since 2007, the synagogue (see photo) has been home to the Open Jewish community Klal Yisrael. This is a progressive Jewish community affiliated with the Reconstructing Judaism movement. Our services are respectful, free and spontaneous, fostering a welcoming atmosphere. Our siddurim (prayer books) include Hebrew text, phonetic transcriptions and Dutch translations for accessibility. Following services, there is ample time for community members to socialize and connect. On Saturdays, members often engage in Torah study after the service.
